Our second spring workshop, by popular request, will be a basic introduction to Motivational Interviewing presented by Dr. Scott Walters from U.T. Southwestern Medical Center.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, directive strategy for promoting behavior change. With more than 100 studies supporting its efficacy in a variety of settings, MI is rapidly becoming an attractive treatment option in counseling, healthcare, social work and criminal justice settings, where interactions may be brief and multi-focused. This workshop will provide an introduction to the principles and strategies of the MI style. Through presentation, demonstration and practice, attendees will learn how to use basic MI techniques to draw out a clients’ own desires, ability, reasons and need for change.
Scott T. Walters, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas School of Public Health. He is the author of 40 articles and five books, including most recently, Motivating Offenders to Change: A Guide for Probation and Parole. In addition to conducting research on effective interventions for behavior change, Dr. Walters trains providers to implement behavior change strategies in a variety of settings, including medical, counseling, social work and criminal justice contexts. Dr. Walters has received national and international awards for his work integrating research and practice, including the 2006 University of Cincinnati Award from the American Probation and Parole Association. This workshop will be a full day (6.0 CE) hands on, didactic and highly interactive introduction to motivational interviewing. Dr. Walters has trained with the founders of MI and offers workshops throughout the country.
