Virtual Workshop Description


In Dr. Badiee's workshop on polyamory, she will discuss key terms, struggles and rewards of polyamory, intersections, best practices for polyamory, common pitfalls in providing therapy to polyamorous folk, and best practices for clinicians treating polyamorous clients.

 

Learning Objectives


  • Participants will be able to define and explain key terms related to polyamory
  • Attendees will be able to identify and discuss the common struggles and rewards experienced by individuals practicing polyamory
  • Attendees will gain insight into the intersections between polyamory and other aspects of identity
  • Participants will learn clinical pitfalls and best practices for providing therapy to polyamorous individuals and relationships

Presenter


Manijeh Badiee, PhD, she/her/hers, is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Master of Science in Clinical/Counseling Psychology program at California State University, San Bernardino. She earned her M.A. in Counseling from St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, and her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dr. Badiee has taught for over a decade and received multiple awards for her excellence in teaching and mentoring. Dr. Badiee is a licensed counseling psychologist (License# CA PSY 30484) and owner of Poly Therapist Psychology Corporation. Through Poly Therapist, she applies a multiculturally aware, evidence-based, and trauma informed approach. Her services include psychotherapy, speaking engagements, and consulting. In addition to polyamorous folk, Dr. Badiee specializes in Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQQIAAP+ folk, and/or people with ADHD. Her identities as Iranian American, bisexual, polyamorous, and femme shape and inform her work.

Dr. Badiee is an educator, scholar, psychologist, and practitioner of polyamory. As an educator, she has conducted speaking engagements to a wide variety of audiences, including therapists, community agencies, and polyamorous groups. Her scholarly work includes a chapter on polyamory in the Encyclopedia of Marriage, Family and Couples Counseling and a scientific manuscript co-authored with Evita Sawyers entitled “Black Queer Femme and Non-Binary Individuals' Polyamory: An Act of Revolution (revised and resubmitted to the journal Sexualities). As a psychologist, Dr. Badiee has provided psychotherapy to polyamorous individuals, couples, and polycules for over a decade. She aims to change the mainstream discourse on polyamory by centering polyamorous BIPOC in her scholarly and therapeutic work. Dr. Badiee has officially practiced polyamory since 2011, but to some extent, identified with it for her entire adult life. She is grateful to have two amazing life partners. In her spare time, Dr. Badiee enjoys hanging out with her fur babies, coloring, integrating mindfulness into all aspects of her life, and watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

(DPA) maintains responsibility for the program and its content as per TSBEP rule 461.11(c)(2)(A). Counselors: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in Diversity or Intervention. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors rule 681.142. Social Workers: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in Diversity or Intervention. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Social Workers rules 781.509 and 781.511(a)-(c). Marriage and Family Therapists: This activity consists of 3.0 clock hours of continuing education in Diversity or Intervention. DPA activities meet the continuing education requirements as outlined in Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists rule 801.264. For all license categories, full attendance is required; no partial credits will be offered for partial attendance. Prior to receiving an attendance certificate, an evaluation must be completed. Please retain the certificate of completion and use as proof of completion when required.
